Promises in the Storm

Have you ever been in a season of life where your prayers turn into pleas?

In my own life, I’m in that place right now.

I fall asleep every night, reminding God that it’s completely in the realm of possibility for me to wake up tomorrow and for this entire situation to be behind me. Whether it is a prolonged illness, a painful situation, or a bumpy road to recovery, life can be hard.

Many times, in my recovery, I have prayed, “Lord, where are you? You could so quickly fix everything! What is the point of prolonging this?”

The challenge in our hearts then becomes real. We know that God cares deeply about our pain. We know that He is fully capable of changing things in an instant. And yet, He’s not doing that.

How do we process this?

We process it with HIM.

Friends, our Father is not afraid of the hard questions. He wants them. He longs for them, because only when you are real to Him can He be real to you. And there is nothing He wants more than to hold you close and walk with you through the storm.

That is where I have been, bringing my very real tears and questions to His feet. It was there in those raw moments with my Lord, that He reminded me of the Israelites. How many times in the desert wanderings do you think they asked God the purpose of this time? How many nights did they fall asleep reminding God that He had the power to take them into the Promised Land tomorrow? I am sure more than we can count, and yet, God said “no” for 40 years.

The beautiful part of our Lord is that He did not leave them with nothing during the period of His “no”. God provided exactly what they needed to make it through the storm. He gave them daily manna and the pillar of cloud and fire to always guide them.

Do not miss the beauty of this.

Throughout the entire 40-year wanderings, God’s people could count on receiving strength for the day and His continual guiding Presence…always. And that is exactly what the Father promises His children today – strength for the day and His Presence to guide us.

What a gift to know that whatever the day holds, He will provide strength and will never leave us alone.

My nightly pleas for deliverance slowly changed into quiet mornings at His feet, claiming His promises and thanking Him for His Presence in the storm.

Friends, in the storm is where we see God show up; our love for Him is deepened, our trust in Him is solidified, and our dependence on Him is magnified. We will emerge and enter the Promised Land.

When we do, we will be new creations because we have seen our Savior and walked with Him through the storm.
