Many of us struggle to keep up with the crazy pace of life’s demands. Our to-do lists are long...commitments, people, and duties seem to insist on having our attention all at once. We are responsible for meeting our own basic needs, like nourishing our bodies and moving in ways that help us thrive. And we often get sucked into a hustle culture that deceives us into believing we must perform and achieve to please God (even when, deep down, we know that isn’t true).
Without realizing it, things become out of balance, broken, and debilitated. We make our best attempts to thrive in chaos while operating at elusive speeds to the point of breakdown.
God adores spending time with us. And while He does desire our best, He knows our best requires rest and time with Him.
Our souls are healed through union with Christ.
“Shalom”, the Hebrew word for peace, means “to bring peace”, “to make things as they should be”, or “to be complete/whole/restored.”
“Jesus, I want you to make me whole again. Something is missing, things are out of balance. I feel broken and I want You to bring it back together.”
“Come to me, all of you who are weary and carry heavy burdens, and I will give you rest.” -Matthew 11:28 NLT
Making room for union with God requires adjustments on our part, even for those who spend time with Him each day and still long for a deeper, more sacred space with Jehovah Shalom (Jesus, Prince of Peace).
“Jesus, help me find Shalom. Restore my soul into union with You.”
Before we can prioritize rest with Jesus, we have a decision to make: “Will I trust God or will I not trust Him? Will I trust Him to do for me in 4 days what would take me a week to complete? Will I trust Him enough to help me prioritize my life and live it in alignment with His design for me?”
“Peace I leave with you; My peace I give to you; not as the world gives do I give to you.” -John 14:27 NKJV
To experience Shalom, we must be willing to surrender the “self life”; the part of us that desires to orient our worlds around it… our comfort, our needs, our desires, our fears. We must release our tight grip of (perceived) control and open our palms to give it to God and then receive what He has for us.
Restoring… Shalom.
Sweet friend, your soul needs rest, comfort, and clarity more than you need to complete a to-do list. (I’m reminding myself of this.) You need opportunities to be still. To hear Jesus… to hear His heart about your very existence. You have questions, you have sorrows, you have unmet longings and a thirst for more.
To experience Shalom, you must lay down the busyness and quiet your soul.
“But I have calmed and quieted my soul, like a weaned child with its mother; like a weaned child is my soul within me.” -Psalm 131:2 ESV
I'm praying Shalom over you in 2025!
